How Zodiac Dates Work

Your sign comes from the Sun. On the day you were born, the Sun sat in one part of the sky. Astrology splits that sky into 12 equal parts, one for each sign. The sign the Sun was in is your Sun sign. That is the sign most people mean when they ask, "What is your sign?"

The Sun moves through the signs in a fixed order, all year long. It starts with Aries at the spring equinox, near March 21. Then it moves to Taurus, then Gemini, and so on, one sign about every 30 days. When the Sun crosses into a new sign, a new sign's season starts. Each season has a clear first day and a clear last day.

Here is the part that trips people up. The Sun does not change signs at midnight. It changes at one exact time of day, and that time is not the same each year. In one year, the Sun may enter Aries at 9 in the morning. The next year, it may enter at 3 in the afternoon. A leap year can shift it back by close to a day.

That small shift is why websites disagree by a day. One site rounds the change to the day before, and one rounds it to the day after. Both sites saw the same sky. They just cut the edge day in two ways. For most birthdays, it makes no change at all. It only matters if you were born on a sign's first or last day.

It also helps to know what a season means. A sign's season is just the stretch of days when the Sun is in that sign. People born in that stretch share that Sun sign. The word "season" here is about the Sun's trip through the sky, not about weather, though the two often line up in a nice way.

Born on the Cusp?

The cusp is the edge where one sign ends and the next one starts. If your birthday is a sign's first or last day, you were born on the cusp. That does not mean you are two signs at once. The Sun was in one sign at the hour you were born. You just need the exact change time for your birth year to know which one.

Some cusp days cause more mix-ups than others. Late December birthdays sit on the Sagittarius and Capricorn edge, and the solstice makes the shift time jump around. Read the Capricorn dates page for that one. Late June birthdays sit on the Gemini and Cancer edge — see the Cancer dates page. And late November birthdays sit on the Scorpio and Sagittarius edge — see the Scorpio dates page. Each page names its cusp days and tells you how to check yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do zodiac dates work?

Your sign is set by where the Sun was on your birthday. The Sun spends about a month in each sign. When the Sun moves into a new sign, a new season starts.

Why do some sites show my sign's dates one day different?

The Sun does not change signs at midnight. It can change in the morning one year and at night the next. So some sites round the dates one way, and some round them the other way.

What zodiac sign is February?

February has two signs. Aquarius runs until February 18, and Pisces starts on February 19. If you were born early in February, you are an Aquarius. Late February birthdays are Pisces.

What if I was born on the first or last day of a sign?

You are most likely that sign. But the Sun can shift by a few hours from year to year. If your birthday is a first or last day, check the exact time the Sun changed signs in your birth year.

Do zodiac dates change every year?

No, not in a big way. The dates stay the same for most people, most years. The Sun's exact change time can move by a few hours, which only matters if you were born right on a cusp day.
